Accessibility

We want everyone to feel welcome and able to enjoy the magic of Christmas Town. This page shares the access information, facilities and support we have in place to help you plan your visit. If you have any questions or additional needs, our team is here to help.

An elf can be seen running a children's workshop. The workshop seems to be writing letters to Santa. The room is decorated with balloons and lights. There are also tables and chairs for people to sit around to do the activity.

Our Commitment

We are continually working to make Christmas Town more accessible each year. This year we are proud to introduce:

  • Removal of all cable ramp covers on public walkways.

  • A dedicated Accessibility Manager on site at all times.

  • Additional quiet sessions for visitors with sensory needs.

  • Additional accessible toilets.

Alongside our usual access measures:

  • Complimentary PA tickets for those who need support.

  • Bridge Creative lived experience stewards working across the event.

  • Clear on-site maps and signage to make navigation as easy as possible.

We welcome feedback from all our visitors. If you have suggestions for how we can improve accessibility, please get in touch: info@bishopaucklandschristmastown.co.uk

πŸ—Ί Site Access

We are making improvements this year to ensure the site is as accessible as possible:

  • Flat, step-free site: Christmas Town is held in Bishop Auckland’s market place, which is flat concrete with dropped kerbs and no steps.

  • No cable ramps: We have removed all ground-level cable ramp covers from public walkways to ensure smooth wheelchair and mobility aid access.

  • Open-air event: The event is mostly outdoors. It can get very cold in December, so please wrap up warm.

  • Accessibility Manager: A dedicated Accessibility Manager will be on site throughout the event to provide assistance.

  • Clear signage: Maps and clear signage will be displayed around the site to help you identify attractions and facilities.

🚻 Facilities & Toilets

  • Accessible toilets will be available and clearly marked on the site map.

  • Accessible car parking is available at North Bondgate Car Park, around 100 yards from the event site.

πŸŽ… Queues & Attractions

  • An accessible queuing system will be in place for attractions such as the Grotto, Rink and Tipis (details will be confirmed closer to the event).

  • Quiet Times: To support visitors with sensory needs, we will have quieter sessions with reduced noise and calmer atmospheres during:

    • Thursday & Friday: 4–5pm

    • Saturday & Sunday: 10–11am

🌟 Performances & Sensory Information

  • Some shows inside the Tipis may include the use of strobes/lasers. Please note there will be no prior announcements before these effects are used.

  • Wandering performers will be present throughout the site; please speak to our team if you need assistance avoiding crowded or noisy areas.
